FBI agents including Agent Alexander Mahone are inspecting an upturned and exploded automobile. The agent who is standing besides Alexander Mahone, remarks on the miserable happening that a convict was dead, so soon, considering that he had just escaped from the prison.
He further asks “So which one of them was it?”

The clock rewinds back twelve hours and the location is the FBI field office situated in Chicago. Agent Lang informs Agent Alexander Mahone that none of the runaway convicts have been seen although all the hospitals and the escapees’ families are under round the clock surveillance. Agent Alexander Mahone, after enquiring about Agent Lang’s surname, informs her that a man on the run will surely commit a mistake in the first seventy-two hours after escape.

At this moment, an agent brings in Michael’s backpack that the police got from a tramp, containing various items including fake passports and cell phones of Lincoln and Michael. Agent Alexander Mahone quickly points out to the agents that Michael’s first mistake has been committed and then Agent Mahone proceeds to interrogate the chap who had broken into Michael’s car, questioning him about the car and details of it. The tramp answers him with description that the car was grey in color, and he found it “15th somewhere”, and also that it was towed by the police, after he stole the backpack bag.

In the meantime, Lincoln and Michael appear at Nika Volek’s apartment without forewarning. Michael immediately yells at her to get some towels, rubbing alcohol, cayenne pepper and alcohol for drinking and subduing Lincoln’s pain. Nika Volek is troubled to see Michael and Lincoln as the police had visited and questioned her. Michael impromptu apologizes to Nika and requests her for some clean clothing for Lincoln and he leaves to get back his car. As he is about to leave Lincoln asks him to overlook the car and leave it. Michael tells him that he doesn’t need just any automobile, but that particular car because it has all the vital things they need to run away. Michael is in for a disappointment though as when he returns to the area where he had parked his car, only pieces of shattered glass are to be found.

Michael locates the place where his car is taken to and just when he is about to fill in the paperwork, the towing company’s telephone rings. The caller is FBI Agent Alexander Mahone who asks the employee helping Michael at the moment, Chuck, if a man has come asking for a grey Honda Accord with a broken side window. Chuck is very nervous and distressed as he answers “Yes, sir…” while Michael is watching him intently and the moment Chuck turns around to talk to Alexander Mahone, Michael snatches the keys from the table and is able to get back the automobile much before the police comes to the spot.

A nurse at the hospital immediately recognizes Sara as she is being released from the hospital. She recalls when she started working at the hospital Dr. Sara was the attending physician.
The police come and arrest Sara as she signs her release forms. Agent Kellerman is watching from nearby Sara being handcuffed and led out by two police officers, because he tells “Caroline Reynolds” that he’ll keep an eye on Sara. Governor Frank Tancredi bails out his daughter and meets her at a cross-examination room. He commands her to set off to daily Narcotics Anonymous meetings and to put the blame of the whole escape on Warden Henry Pope. Just as he is about to depart, Governor Frank informs Dr. Sara that he would be sworn in as the Vice President of the United States in a week and that although she will be invited to the swearing in ceremony, she would not attend it.

Bellick visits a convenience store to shop for beer and teriyaki jerky, and comes across his arch-rival Geary who has now found his security guard job. They both have a brawl in the store, but end up drinking beer together and Bellick and Geary form a bounty hunter team to grab the escapees and win the reward .They also cross-examine Manche Sanchez, the cousin of Fernando Sucre.

Sucre, hotwires a vintage Chevrolet El Camino pickup in Defiance, Ohio and then climbs aboard a passing freight train to escape from a Pennsylvania State Trooper in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Fernando then comes to Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York, and comes to know that Maricruz, who is pregnant with his baby, is getting married to his cousin in Las Vegas. He then proceeds to the marriage on the motorcycle of a friend, a 1952 Ural.

C-Note calls up his frightened and hesitant wife, and tells her that he’ll be waiting for her in the “Rainbow Room” on the point where they “took that beautiful picture.” FBI Agent Alexander Mahone’s team has bugged the phone call and Agent Lang concludes that C-Note is referring to the Rainbow Room restaurant in Manhattan, New York and sends C-Note’s mug shots there. C-Note later visits his daughter at break in her school and relays a message for her mom to switch on the porch light at seven pm if she desires to meet him. He comes to his home a bit early and hides across the street and waits for his wife to turn on the light on the porch. However, the “Rainbow Room” is actually the bedroom of their daughter, and a photograph hung on the wall next to the window is the picture C-Note was talking about. His wife turns on the porch light and seats herself for an interview with FBI Agent Lang.

Lincoln and Michael move out from Nika’s house in their car and take a turn when they are at Illinois Route 38. All this is spelled out on the tattoo on Michael’s wrist in form of a barcode “38 12 1037″ .Here “38″ refers to Route 38 and after taking a turn into the Route 38, Michael resets the mileage counter of the car. When the mileage counter reaches 12, Michael halts the car in the central point of a bridge. “12″ refers to the number of miles that it takes to reach that particular bridge. FBI Agents Alexander Mahone and Wheeler follow Lincoln and Michael’s location through their mobile phone. They observe that they have stopped abruptly, and guess that they may be meeting someone there.

Lincoln and Michael unscrew a part of the railings on the bridge to stage a car accident and they turn on the car radio they set it to “scan”. And when the radio reaches the frequency “103.7″ which also happen to be the last four numbers of the tattoo, it will activate the bomb to burst out. Both of them get away just in time, before Alexander Mahone and Wheeler come and the Michael’ Honda Accord explodes along with false corpses positioned in the front seats. The radio was playing the song “Hush” by Deep Purple as the car exploded.

Now, cutting back to present, as Alexander Mahone is staring at the leftovers of the explosion, an agent standing next to him questions, “So which one of them was it?” Alexander Mahone replies, “Shales… Scofield, maybe Scofield.”
As Alexander Mahone walks away, Agent Wheeler tells the agent who had put forward the question that Oscar Shales was an escapee that Alexander Mahone could never recapture. Alexander Mahone gets very tense and pops up some pills from his pen.

Nika comes by in her car and hands over Michael her vehicle’s keys. Michael shows gratitude to Nika and promises her that he will pay her $10,000 once he and his brother reach Mexico and also he would reimburse her $30,000 for her car. When Nika then enquires Michael if will meet up with Dr. Sara he answers that he doesn’t know and gives the car keys to Lincoln, who takes control of the vehicle.
But they are noticed by Bellick and Geary as they leave.
